A Tongue Tie Doula™ (TTD) is a licensed or board certified professional who operates within his or her professional scope of practice (SOP). This certification recognizes a specific approach to providing care for families dealing with tongue and/or lip ties and issues stemming from tethered oral tissue. They are committed to care that looks at ALL needs; emotional, logistical, functional, and informational, as well as addressing the basic physical challenges that any tongue tie savvy professional would provide. A keen education in ties is required, but also so much more.
Families, as well as professionals, can look for a tongue tie guru (such as an IBCLC, SLP, COM, ENT, DDS, LMBT, DC, MD, or DO) who is also a Tongue Tie Doula™ to know they’ve invested in advanced education and evolved, bigger picture care plans within their professional SOP. It’s not just about good clinical care, but full support of the process (through teaching, tools, and collaboration with other professionals) of fully obtaining true oral function. Since the TTD certification is multidisciplinary, a clear standard of professional ethics in collaboration and communication is also called for. A foundation in biological norms and appreciation for a functional medicine mindset is imperative to the Tongue Tie Doula. They don’t refer patients out and then forget about them or give up without answers!
As you look through the database, if you don’t find someone in the exact area or field you’re looking for, contacting the closest you can find is recommended. Part of being a TTD is always working to create, and expand, one’s local tongue tie community so as to have as many resources as possible. A certified TTD is likely to have suggestions about quality options in other fields or adjoining geographical areas. States/Countries highlighted as links currently have a certified TTD listed.
